I don't know what this will become yet. But, Google insisted on me giving them a URL when I uploaded a video to them, so I figured I'd better set something up. Let's see what happens!

Ellinis docking in Melbourne (1968)

This is some film of a big ship called Ellinis docking at Station Pier in Melbourne sometime during 1968. Mum can't remember taking this but we know it is this from the label on the filmreel. Our guess is that it is either meeting someone who was a friend of a friend migrating to Australia; or simply Mum being creative on a church youth group outing. She said going to see a ship arrive is one of the things that people did back then for fun. Besides the Ellinis, there is also a cameo appearance by a tugboat called Batman.

I like this clip partly just 'cos it seems like a totally different world, very different arriving by ship to arriving at the airport! Mum's also been quite creative with her splicing together of various clips in this. I thought I'd share it on Google just in case anyone who sailed on it stumbles across it... I can imagine it'd be a nice family heirloom to have a clip of the ship you migrated to Australia on.

Dear Lynette,

Well done for sharing this film clip. Too often this type of imagery is consigned to the bin. I served on the Ellinis in 1974 for 4 round voyages.

Regards

John Carr

Hi Lynette, Thank you so much for uploding this footage. I came across it last week whilst helping the kids research their family heritage for a school project. Not only is this the docking of the day I arrived in Australia from England as a 5 year old, our family believe the little boy at the end of the film in the blue vest is my brother, Anthony Murphy who was 10 at the time!!! How amazing There were 8 members of the Murphy family aboard the ship and I have also sent the link to another family (the Seddons) who I think had 5 members aboard. So thank you so much. I have actually captured the footage and added music and some info to create a DVD. I love to send you a copy if you would like to email me at pbncdavey@iprimus.com.au Regards Bernie Davey (nee Murphy)

I came across this footage whilst just browsing the names of the ships I sailed to and from Australia in.
The Ellinis was the ship we went to Australia in and The Achille Lauro was our return ship later. (That had a very colourful life and a very sad demise.) I loved watching this film clip and appreciate you putting it on the web. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the clip. I am reading a book at the moment called the "10 pound poms". I came out on the Ellinis in 1968 as a 9 year old. The boy at the end of the clip could also be my brother Eddy who was 10 at the time when the ship docked at Port Melbourne. He used to love looking overboard when we were on our journey to Australia and always wore shorts. My family consisted of myself, mum and dad and two brothers. We are all still alive and well and living in Melbourne. Our first home was Altona Hostel.

On the 1st November 1969 I was 11 yrs of age when we sailed on the Ellinis from Southampton to Oz with my mum and Dad and Brother and sis. I was 12 on the ships journey. It was a Journey I will never forget. We was fortunate to see our old friend the Ellinis again two years later to take us back to England. I will always cherish the memories of a lovely ship and her wonderful Crew. May her name Live on somewhere on another ship. I heard she had been broken up, what a shame!

Wow,
Our family arrived to Australia in 1966 December on the Ellinis. I could see the little boy and it reminded me of how I must have been as a 6 year old back then. Great clip.

Thanks for this Lynette. I'm currently researching ideas for my husband's 60th Birthday surprise in May. He travelled on the Ellinis in 1968 so he was 9, almost 10. This video clip brought tears to my eyes and really brought it home to me what a momentous experience this was for him and his mother. He returned to the UK 13 years but did settled in Perth and joined the RAAF at 15! His mother remains in Perth. I'd love to know more and wonder if other passengers keep in contact. Susanne.

Ps. Have you lived in the UK? I know someone with the name Lynette Webb.
